Hobbit of a Lifetime

Star of the first film in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Dominic Monaghan talks about being stabbed, learning to surf and snogging on the set of the biggest movie ever made...

What was the best thing about filming Lord Of The Rings?
When you're a little tiny you play cops and robbers. We got to run from real life six foot monsters - it was a dream come true.

Are you happy with your new-found fame?

The battle scenes were pretty scary. Were there any injuries?

Are you anything like your character, the Hobbit Meriadoc 'Merry' Brandybuck?
Elements of him are like me - he's sharp and quick, he thinks about things and looks at the big picture,

What was it like being in a hobbit's costume all day?
I had to wear a fat suit - it was like a woman's swimming costume with a big fat tummy, a pair of trousers, a shirt, a waistcoat, a jacket, a cape and a hood. You sweat all day long - we had to drink three litres of water a day.

What did you do when you weren't working?
The movie was filmed in New Zealand so we learned to surf and scuba dive. We went horse riding, bungy jumping, snowboarding, skiing - it was quite laddy. You'd think after spending 14 hours a day, six days a week together you'd want a break. But we went to Sydney and Thailand together on holiday - we became the best of friends.

The Hobbits don't get much romance. Have you ever had an on-screen snog?
Yeah, fortunately, I had to kiss two girls - one called Tabitha and another called Juliette - when I was working n a TV series in France. It's a good day when you get paid to kiss a sexy girl.

Are you seeing anyone at the moment?
No. I'm single. I've been away which makes it quite complicated. But I'm always up for kissing. I'm going out in London tonight so kissing could well be on the cards.

A Few of Dom's Favourite Things...

Hobbies...
Surfing and football. I'm a huge Man United fan. I like going out with my mates, going to the movies and watching concerts.

Going on holiday...
I'm going to see if my brother wants to come to Gibraltar with me. I know a few people there, it's warm and there's good surf.

Music...
I like guitar-based stuff. In terms of Smash Hits-type music, I like S Club 6 - they're brilliant. I liked their disco tune Don't Stop Moving' the best and 'N Sync's Pop was quite cool too.

Bands...
Radiohead, Coldplay, Badly Drawn Boy, the Doves, Stone Roses, Oasis, Travis and Macy Gray - they're on my stereo at the moment.

Actors...
I'd like to work with Ethan Hawke, Chloë Sevigny or Tim Roth.
