1:06 pm: David Goyer is an “enormous fan of Lost” and says the show “proved to me that there could be a place on network television for” dramas with large ensembles featuring different shades of morality. Damon Lindelof’s advice to him: “Tell your story. Stick to your guns.”

[...]

1:09 pm: Monaghan, who says FF is “not as sophisticated” and mythology-rich as Lost, signed on without a script or a specific character description. “He took an enormous leap of faith,” says David Goyer. Monaghan’s only request: He wanted to play someone vastly different than Charlie. Producers remain mum on who exactly he will be playing.

1:10 pm: Stalker alert! Monaghan’s initial meeting with producers took place at Delancey on Sunset. Chances are, he’ll be back! (Directions)

TCA TV press tour: 'FlashForward' live blog

By Rick Porter

August 8, 2009 12:58 PM

ABC showed TV critics the pilot of "Flashforward" Saturday, right before the cast and producers came on stage for a question-and-answer session. That should make for a lively panel, and we'll be live-blogging it starting about 1 p.m. Pacific time.

On stage are stars Sonya Walger, Joseph Fiennes, John Cho, Courtney B. Vance and Dominic Monaghan, co-creator David S. Goyer and executive producers Jessika Borsiczky Goyer and Marc Guggenheim.

First question: How many questions will you answer in season one? David Goyer says most of them, including a big one at the end of the pilot, will be answered. He adds it would probably need about three seasons to get to everything.

[...]

Lessons learned from "Lost"? David Goyer: "I'm an enormous, enormous fan of 'Lost' ... and it proved to me there could be a place for a show like that" on network TV. What it taught him is that you can do a show with a big cast and tell a big story that "traffics in shades of gray." He doesn't know if the what-not-to-do lessons of "Lost" will apply here, since "FF" isn't on the air yet. He does say, however, that he and his crew think about their obligation to viewers in telling the story.

Dominic Monaghan says there are obvious similarities between "FF" and "Lost," but there are "distinct differences" -- this show's mythology isn't as complex, he thinks.

Monaghan told his agent that "I don't want to take a deeply American part away from someone who's authentically American" after reading the "FF" pilot. Fellow stars Walger and Fiennes feign leaving the stage. "He has higher standards than you," Guggenheim cracks.

August 8th, 2009

1:05PM: On the lessons learned from LOST, Goyer shares that, “LOST taught me that you can do a show with a large ensemble cast and tell a big cinematic story.” Tell that to the creators of THE NINE, INVASION, SURFACE, JERICHO, KIDNAPPED etc…

[...]

1:10PM: Star Dominic Monaghan claims that while there are obviously similarities between FLASHFORWARD and LOST, “I don’t think we’re necessarily dealing with the same deeply rooted mythology.” Begging the question… has Monaghan seen the premiere?

Destiny Calls (in Advance): Cast and Crew Discuss "FlashForward"

Written by Jace | Saturday, August 08, 2009

[...]

On hand at the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour in Pasadena were Flash Forward cast members Sonya Walger, Dominic Monaghan, Joseph Fiennes, John Cho, Courtney B. Vance and executive producers David S. Goyer, Jessica Borsiczky Goyer, and Marc Guggenheim.

[...]

Meanwhile, Lost's Dominic Monaghan signed on to FlashForward without seeing single script page for his character, said Goyer, went on to say that in doing so Dominic made a huge leap of faith.

Monaghan contended that there are lots of similarities between FlashForward and Lost but that there are "distinct differences" between the two: "FlashForward is not as deeply rooted in a mythology that needs to be solved," said Monaghan.

One of the funniest moments of the panel came when Monaghan ribbed fellow Brits Sonya Walger and Joseph Fiennes for "stealing roles that should go to American actors." Jokingly, of course.

Dominic Monaghan, a wild card in the buzz over this series, does not reveal who his character is but speaks to the zeitgeist noting that there are similarities to “Flash Forward” in “Lost” in terms of its large ensemble cast and ambitious storyline. He also speaks to the fact that with a cast that is similar in many ways (to “Lost”) in addition to a globally connected storyline, it is easier to sell the series internationally (which is very important overall in terms of resell value). “Flash Forward” he says is as deeply rooted in a mythology that needs to be solved as “Lost” but adds that it is more simplistic. He says that he was in Hawaii (where they shoot “Lost”) when he read the pilot for “Flash Forward”.

He jokes half seriously that he didnt want to take parts away from Americans (then he realizes what he said looking across the room at Englishman Joseph Fiennes). David and Jessika asked him to meet. It was a bar on Sunset called Delanceys where Dom had a pint of Boddingtons. He said it was one of those special meetings but that the most important thing for him was to do something completely different from Charlie on “Lost”. Goyer said he had just the part for him. After that, Dom again half jokes that it was just about agreeing on money.

[Comment From Piere ]
Question for Dom: Any travel plans for the next month? Maybe Oahu for vacation?
1:06
@Piere: I'll try.
[...]

1:09
Dom, comparing LOST and FF: FF is more simplistic than LOST since it doesn't have the mythology.

[...]

1:20
@Janna: They're up to episode 111 already. They have seven in hand before they started filming. With all the hype, they're probably good for the first year.

[...]

1:29
Courtney, Joe and David were on the train from San Diego to LA after Comic-Con and he had a script for Episode 5 which had a lot of big things for Courtney's character. David was able to see Courtney's response the first time he saw it. "You'd never believe a character could do those things to a kangaroo."
[...]

1:37
What are you going to do on April 29? "Watching the 21st episode." They'll [actors] be on vacation.
1:38
End of the panel. Sorry Piere...couldn't get a mic. Let me see if I can get to Dom in the pit.

[...]

1:41
@Piere: A wry smile is your answer.
1:42
They whisked Dom away to interviews quickly.
1:43
Dom did say that FF is very protective of the characters, and he doesn't know much about Simon. When he started LOST he knew quite a bit about Charlie -- rock star, druggie, etc -- but he knows nothing (or isn't telling).
1:43
[Comment From Piere ]
so you asked and he smiled?
1:44
@Piere: A bunch of us asked questions as he was being whisked away.
