Logan in the Morning (My106.1 Philadelphia), 29 October 2009
Articles & Interviews - 2009

Logan: ...six one, 8:39 in the morning. It is Logan.

Tonight one of my favorite shows on ABC, the new one, "FlashForward," featuring a couple of former cast members from "Lost," Penny - remember Penny - and also Charlie. And here he is, Charlie from "Lost," now Simon on "FlashForward," actor Dominic Monaghan.

Dominic, hey man.

Dominic Monaghan:
Hello.

Logan: Hey, man, how are you doing?

Dominic: Good.

Logan: Dude, I've got to tell you something. This "FlashForward" show tonight, 8:00 on six ABC, one of my favorite new shows, and I know Simon, your character, makes an appearance tonight. Right?

Dominic: Yeah, he shows up for the first real time in the show.

Logan: I was a little skeptical, Dominic, when I heard this thing about time shifting. I said, "Oh, my god, it's going to be confusing like "Lost," but the show really moves, and it's not confusing like "Lost." So, I feel good about the show. Explain to somebody who hasn't seen the show, briefly, what the show's all about.

Dominic: All right. Essentially, it's about what happens to the world when everyone on the planet passes out and has a vision of their future, and essentially, how that sends the world into chaos and also, to a certain extent, a sense of order.

I think people are starting to get used to this idea of a non-linear story, something that moves forward and backwards in time, and because of that, it is a little easier to follow.

Logan: Are you like the bad guy who starts it all? Here's a clip.

Dominic: I know what caused the flash forward.

Logan: What's causing these flash forwards? Got to watch, right?

Dominic: Yeah, I guess you've got to watch. He's a little bit more complex than just essentially being the bad guy. He has elements to him that are obviously a little hard to take, but I don't think necessarily Simon is as black and white as calling him a bad guy.

Logan: Right. So, do people get confused when they see you, and they're like, "oh, my god, that's Charlie from 'Lost'"? And then they see Penny from "Lost" on the show and one of the main characters, Dr. Olivia. Do people come up to you confused like, "Wait a minute. I thought you were on 'Lost'"? Because the shows are similar, kind of, sort of. They all have that same feel to it.

Dominic: Yeah, yeah. I mean, up to now, I've not featured in "FlashForward" enough for people to start recognizing me as the guy from "FlashForward." I tend to get Charlie from "Lost," or still the character that I played in "Lord of the Rings." I mean, it's just good to get recognition, essentially.

Logan: Now listen, whenever somebody brings up your bio, whatever, Google yourself, we see you, we see Charlie from "Lost, " we see "FlashForward," and then it says hobbit on "Lord of the Rings." Does the hobbit stuff bother you? It was such an unbelievably huge franchise. Nothing should bother you at this point, right?

Dominic:
No, I mean, on the contrary, being associated with the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy is just an absolute privilege. I mean, it opened a lot of doors for me and is a movie that will stand the test of time, so it's a great thing to be recognized for.

Logan: So, do you think the world needs a restart? Do you think it's a good idea if this really happened?

Dominic: I don't know. I think it would probably send human consciousness into a state of chaos. There are elements about the planet that I think need a shake up. I think one of my main concerns about planet Earth is that if there was another animal on the planet that was breeding in the way that we were, we would do something about it. We tend to be breeding a little bit out of control. There's good and bad elements. I think probably, essentially, you have to fall down to learn the lesson, before you scrape yourself off and get going again.

Logan: So, you're saying there are too many people on the planet.

Dominic:
Yeah, I think there are way too many people on the planet.

Logan: Oh, OK. What would you want to know six months from now, personally? Would you want to know anything? Would you not want to know?

Dominic: Yeah, I'd want to know how I was doing, if I was happy, if I was all right, if my life was going OK.

Logan: Well, you know, Dominic Monaghan, we'd like to know, and have a flash forward, and find out if the Phillies actually won the World Series.

Dominic: I think I always vote for the underdog, and I think in that situation you guys are the underdog. So, you guys get my vote.

Logan: Yes! Dominic Monaghan, tonight we'll be watching "FlashForward," 8:00 on six ABC. Nice talking with you, Dominic. Have a great day. All right, dude?

Dominic:
OK. You, too, man.
