Occupation: Actor who plays Merry, one of the hobbits in the Lord of the Rings films. The last in the trilogy goes on general release in the UK tomorrow.

A tutor recalls: "Dom left after a year or so because he got a part in Hetty Wainthropp Investigates. He had that intuitive actor intelligence at a very early age and I'd always thought he would end up doing TV or film work. He bluffed his way through things easily and relied on his personality quite a lot. When he told me he'd got the part of Merry, I thought it was some small-scale BBC thing. I couldn't believe it when I saw his face up on the screen, I thought bloody hell."
