01/03/2004 09:00 Red Hobbit Enjoys Oscars Success Congratulations to celebrity United fan Dominic Monaghan after his film The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King scooped a staggering eleven Oscars on Sunday. The final part of the epic trilogy swept the board at the 76th annual Academy Awards ceremony and became the first fantasy film to win best picture.
It picked up a further ten awards including best director for Peter Jackson, best adapted screenplay, best visual affects and best art direction, equalling the record trophy tally at the Hollywood ceremony. Dominic, who played the Hobbit Meriadoc 'Merry' Brandybuck in the trilogy, attended the awards with co-stars Elijah Wood, Liv Tyler and Sir Ian McKellen.
ManUtd.com caught up with Dominic on a recent visit back to Old Trafford when he talked about his feelings on the Lord of the Rings adventure. "You go through certain experiences in your life when everything just turns on a right angle," explained Dominic.
"That's what happened with Lord of the Rings. I was heading one way, but by saying yes to Peter Jackson I then spent the next year and a half in New Zealand. "It's hard to sum up in a sentence but in every single way it was a life-changing experience and one I'll never forget."
You can watch three parts of our exclusive video interview with Dominic on this page and a further three parts on MU.tv Channel 1.
