Little Boy Lost

From hobbit to heroin addict, diminutive Dominic Monaghan has finally hit the big time.

By Benji Wilson

Living on a tropical island with his pet chameleons, John Lennon tattoos and a beard, Dominic Monaghan makes quite a convincing hippy warrior. Which may account for the laid-back approach to his new-found fame. A starring role as hobbit Merry in The Lord of the Rings trilogy was followed by a prominent casting as drug-addled rocker Charlie in the smash-hit TV series Lost. And he has also trampled over showbiz's most hallowed commandment: 'Thou shalt not date they co-star.' Cue a media feeding frenzy.

According to rumors, Dominic and Evangeline Lily (Lost's Kate) are now engaged, but Dominic keeps his cards close to his chest.

"The reason people are making up bullshit statements about me is because I don't talk to the press [about personal stuff]. It's my rule."

So things we've read about imminent marriages, trips to England for parental approval and Hawaiian stag nights is pure speculation?

"Yeah. What they're hoping for is a reaction. I'm not one of those dickheads like Paris Hilton who go, 'I just want to be left alone...' and then they go to The Ivy for lunch and have 15 photographers taking their pictures."

Dominic readily admits that being in the spotlight is not without its benefits, though: "I have used whatever notoriety I've got to meet people that I want to meet," he says. "I met Eddie Izzard, who is a big hero of mine. I knew that he was going to be on a talk show that I'd been on so I asked if I could go along too."

Fame also has its benefits when it comes to designer freebies: "I'm only 5ft 7in so I need clothes that understand a guy of smaller stature. If I'm being very cheeky I'll say to my publicist, 'I like this designer, could you see if they, err, like me?' It works sometimes--except when they say they've never fucking heard of me..."
