Dominic Monaghan has added his name to a letter recommending that California's senate that it pass AB 376, the California Shark Protection Act, banning the possession, sale and distribution of shark fins in California.

The letter's main signers are the presidents/directors of the HSUS, WildAid, the National Resource Defense Council and Leonardo DiCaprio, to which 35 other celebrities have "joined" in co-signing, including Dom and his co-stars Ian Somerhalder and Megan Fox.

You can download a PDF copy of the letter to which Dom added his name from this page.

Shark populations are being devastated worldwide due, among other things, modern intensive longline fishing techniques and to a market for shark fins as a luxury food additive. Shark finning is particularly cruel as the fins are usually removed from a living animal which is then dumped, mutilated and unable to swim, back into the ocean to drown or bleed to death. California is the largest market for shark fins outside of Asia, hence the need for a ban. The bill passed California's assembly in May.
