Lord of the Rings buddies take time out in Tuam

January 13, 2011 - 7:00am

Two of Hollywood’s hottest stars arrived in Tuam over the weekend . . . and it was not surprising that they sent female hearts fluttering.

But there was a distinct purpose to the visit from Dominic Monaghan, who made his name in the hit TV series Lost and starred in the adaptation of Lord of the Rings trilogy. He was looking to meet relatives in the Tuam area.

He was joined on the trip by his fellow Lord of the Rings star Elijah Wood, who achieved super-stardom as Frodo Baggins in Lord of the Rings.

During his stay in Tuam, Dominic linked up with several cousins in the town and also spent time visiting the Monaghan clan in Milltown.
The two actors did something of a tour of the south and south west before arriving in Galway where Dominic visited other relations in Gort.

It was then on to the Tuam area where they spent six days visiting Dominic’s cousin Fidelma Burke (formerly Monaghan) and her two children Derek, a well known cyclist, and Tracey.

While in Tuam, he and Elijah Wood socialised locally and paid a visit to the popular Bridge Bar where they were greeted by proprietor Dave Coen.

They sipped pints of black for around an hour and a half until word spread around town that they were in the pub and it was then they decided to take their leave of the premises but while there, they chatted away to locals and seemed to be having a great time.
